Following the Cabinet reshuffle in December 2023, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) was established with the mandate to lead the governance of sustainable and inclusive electricity and water supply systems in Malaysia. The Ministry plays a critical role in ensuring the long-term well-being of the people and the nation through effective stewardship of two of the country’s most essential resources — energy and water.
The Ministry was officially formed on 12 December 2023 under its initial name, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Public Utility Efficiency (KPTDGA). However, to better reflect its actual role and responsibilities in spearheading the transformation of the national energy and water sectors, the Cabinet approved a name change on 8 February 2024, renaming it as the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA).
The acronym PETRA was thoughtfully chosen to symbolise the Ministry’s dual mission. The first three letters, "PET", represent Peralihan Tenaga or Energy Transition, while the last three letters, "TRA", signify Transformasi Air or Water Transformation. This symbolic representation highlights PETRA's commitment to leading Malaysia’s progress towards cleaner energy and more resilient water systems.
The establishment of PETRA marks a strategic move by the Government of Malaysia to address the growing challenges of energy sustainability and water security in a holistic and integrated manner. The Ministry aims to promote innovation, efficiency, and inclusivity across these sectors in alignment with national development goals and global sustainability agendas.
